Business protection for directors and owners

Building a business takes years, but losing a key person or a shareholder can put everything at risk in a matter of weeks. We help you set up practical, tax-aware solutions that protect your people and your profits. Our goal is to give you clear advice and get the right cover in place without the usual administrative headache.

Shareholder Protection

If a shareholder dies or becomes seriously ill, their stake in the business usually passes to their family. This can create a difficult situation where the family wants the value of the shares, but the remaining directors want to keep control of the company.

Shareholder Protection provides the funds for a fair, legal buy-out. This ensures the family receives their inheritance quickly while the surviving directors keep the business moving without outside interference. We help you plan for valuations and cross-option agreements so the legal side is as solid as the financial one.

Relevant Life

Relevant Life is a popular choice for smaller companies. It allows the business to pay for a director’s or key employee’s life insurance. Because the company pays the premiums, it is usually treated as a deductible business expense.

For the person being covered, it doesn’t count as a benefit-in-kind. This means you get the protection you need without it increasing your personal tax bill. The payout is held in a trust, which usually keeps it outside of your estate for inheritance tax purposes.

Key Person Protection

Every business has a few people who are essential to its success. If a “Key Person” is suddenly unable to work due to death or a serious illness, the financial hit can be massive.

Key Person Protection is a policy owned by the business. If the worst happens, the company receives a cash injection.

This money can be used to:
  • Cover the cost of finding and training a replacement.
  • Manage a temporary drop in profits.
  • Pay off business debts or protect bank covenants.

Business Loan Protection

Many directors use personal guarantees to secure business loans or overdrafts. If you are no longer there to manage the business, those debts can become a huge burden for your family or your partners.

Business Loan Protection ensures that if a guarantor or key individual dies or becomes critically ill, there is enough money to pay back the lenders. This keeps your personal assets safe and ensures the business stays stable during a stressful time.

Executive Income Protection

Most standard sick pay schemes aren’t enough for directors who rely on a mix of salary and dividends. Executive Income Protection is a company-paid policy that pays out if a director or key employee cannot work due to injury or illness.

The policy can be set up to cover your salary, dividends, and even pension contributions. The benefit is paid to the employer, who then continues to pay the employee, helping you maintain your lifestyle while you focus on recovery.

Business
Private Medical Insurance

The biggest cost of illness for a business is often the time spent waiting for treatment. Business Private Medical Insurance gives you and your team fast access to private consultations, diagnostics, and surgery.

We can tailor these schemes for teams of any size. By reducing downtime and offering extra support like mental health services or physiotherapy, you aren’t just looking after your staff, you are protecting the productivity of the entire company.

Important Information

  • Protection policies, if cancelled or premiums are stopped, will cease cover.
  • Failure to disclose any requested or relevant information may adversely affect any future claims.
  • At the end of the term selected, cover will cease and no further benefit will be payable.
  • The present tax-free treatment of the policy benefits may change.
  • If this policy is to replace any existing policy offering the same type/level of cover, you must not cancel any existing policy until the new policy is in force.
  • Benefits may be reduced if you receive other regular income, such as salary or pension.
  • The payment of any other payments (e.g. sick pay) may have an impact on the benefits payable.
